Therapite Soon to be in Texas

270px-Texas_in_United_States.svg

No, its not a rumor. I can tell you that in the next few months Therap will have a team member based in the State of Texas….namely, ME…and NO, I’m not abandoning any of my current NW Coast Therap customers…its simply a move we feel is necessary to better respond to the needs of our Texas customers and grow our services in the State.

Where, specifically will our new “office” be located? At this point lets just call it…Somewhere, Texas…because the jury is still out on the exact city that Therapville will inhabit.

I can tell you that we’ve narrowed it down to Houston (its close to the water) or Austin…but after a nice chat with Nancy Newberry (American Habilitation) I think I’m leaning toward the Austin area. I’m told its only 3 hours away from really beautiful water (North Padre) and there are a number of lakes nearby that we will be able to enjoy during down time (provided there is cell coverage and electricity). SOOOO….stay tuned. I’ll be doing my own mini-version of “House Hunters – Texas” and you are welcome to come along for the excruciating…I mean…exciting ride.

Down Syndrome Takes on a Different Perspective

My friend, Steve Eidelman sent this link over. Its moving, touching, and requires attention….by me. Take a look at this and then smile…what a terrific portrayal of individuals with Down Syndrome. Way to go, Dublin Arts Council!

The article below is by Ashley Brooks. To watch the video, click on the link.

Beautiful.  Strong.  Unique.  Words not often associated with Down Syndrome.  After seeing photographs from an exhibition that has landed at the Dublin Arts Council, you may see things differently.

“When my daughter, Billie-Jo was born, there was no positive images of Down Syndrome,” says curator of Shifting Perspectives and photographer, Richard Bailey.  In the course of researching his daughter’s condition, he was disheartened by the photographs he found. Often they depictied people in institutions or disturbing images of people who simply seemed discarded.  This set him and a group of UK photographers who were also parents of children with Down Syndrome, to create new images that reflected their experiences as parents.  To create hope.

“What one of the main overriding ideas of the whole exhibition is to show that these are individuals.  Our children are individuals.  They can’t be summed up by one little box that says Down Syndrome.” says Bailey.

Shifting Perspectives shows the rich, individual lives that many with Down Syndrome have.  Over the course of seven years these photographers have captured images of marriage, of spirituality, of soccer players, and magicians.  Bailey:  “People with Down Syndrome have aspirations; they have wants, needs, likes and dislikes, just like everybody else. [They] can fall in love, have a job, they can do all kinds of things if they have the right support behind them.”

The Dublin Arts Council and Richard Bailey held a self-portrait workshop with the local Down Syndrome community that echoed that sentiment.  Richard asked the participants to show how they feel or what they are, “We had somebody who likes to play guitar, we had a [college] graduate, an Eagle Scout, somebody who liked DJ’ing…I think the main thing this [exhibition] shows is for everybody to look at the individual, and not the condition.”

“The idea was just to show the enthusiasm and the individuality and celebrate; celebrate our children.”

Shifting Perspectives is on view at the Dublin Arts Council gallery though November 4th, 7125 Riverside Drive, Dublin, Ohio.  For hours and information visit their website, www.dublinarts.org.   Bailey and the other photographers continue to document new images of Down Syndrome through a generous grant from GlaxoSmithKline in the UK.  To find out more information and see the photographs, visit: shiftingperspectives.org.

First on the list of Nebraska applications - statewide incident reporting using Therap’s General Event Report followed by Individualized Budgets. That’s right, I wrote “Individualized Budgets”, yes, it can be done at the state level!

Toward Person-Centeredness

You said you wanted Therap to be more individualized. You said you wanted more information in one location…well, by this Spring/Summer you should have it.

The newest and greatest feature coming out in our next major update - Therap 9.0  – will be the Individual Home.  This is a new page (or series of pages actually that will allow a user to see the most pertinent plans, background, and activity for an individual.

Check out the screen shot below and then email me and write, “Anna…I love Therap”…. yes…we ALL love Therap because Therap is all about what our providers need, request, and want from an electronic documentation provider! NO OTHER COMPANY comes close….

Just Keeps Getting Better….and better…..

This week we will be submitting our brand new Therap T-Log App to the Apple App Store! Whoo Hoo!!!!

Different from the Mobile T-Log Reader, which you may have used before, the is a “real” native iPhone (or iPad or iPod Touch) App.

In addition to being able to read and write T-Logs, you can also include photos, audio, and your GPS Location!  We’ll be showing this off in Fishkill and you should be able to try it out for yourself in a few weeks.

Just ONE MORE REASON that Therap is your #1 choice when it comes to electronic documentation! I love it!!!!!
