District of Columbia Therap Users Group a Success

More than forty people from providers serving people in the District of Columbia met at the offices of RCM of a Therap Users Group. The hot topics for DC providers were the recent Medicaid audit, the extensive health reporting requirements, and how Therap can help providers better manage those tasks. Some DC providers using Therap’s Billing capabilities as a quality assurance tool reported minimal difficulty with the Medicaid audit. Therap’s automated services authorization systems tracks services authorizations as they are received and alerts the provider when the authorized units are nearing the end and re-authorization is needed. The health tracking is a work is progress although some providers have looked the the Comprehensive Health Assessment (CHAT) and are convinced it will cover all of the reporting needed in the District.

The DC Therap Users Meeting on December 15th is filling up rapidly. More than 35 people are registered to attend. There seems to be a lot of interest in the meeting due to some recent audits and the announcement of several new reporting requirements. Some Therap users went through the audits with few if any problems. There have also been a number of requests to modify some DC reporting forms and the Users Group will be an opportunity to discuss those forms as a group. Read more »

Electronic Health Records and Meaningful Use for Long Term Care for People with Developmental Disabilities

As I talk to current and prospective Therap users there is a lot of confusion about electronic health record regulations. The other day at a conference I said that Therap is working on meeting HITECH standards.  The question that came back at me was “but has Therap met the “meaningful use” standards.  That question is not so easy and I am hearing it more often.  The question also highlights the carrot and stick approach to EHRs.

The stick in the EHR story is the HITECH ACT. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) established the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH). HITECH will require the use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) by Health Care Providers. Based on HITECH an EHR must:

  • Include all patient demographic and clinical health information, such as medical history and problem lists; and have the capacity to:
    • provide clinical decision support;
    • support physician order entry;
    • capture and query information relevant to health care quality; and,
    • exchange electronic health information with, and integrate such information from other sources.

As defined in ARRA “Health Care Providers” includes nursing facilities, home health entities, or other long term care facilities, etc. Read more »

National Conference for Provider Administrators, Feb 7-9, 2012

East Hanover, New Jersey
District of Columbia Providers were out in force at last year’s National Conference. Discussions included staff training, staff professionalism, and the new consolidated monitoring tool. The most compelling discussion was that DC Providers would like to work with Therap to develop an online process to manage and report on the consolidated monitoring tool for the Evans Exit Plan.
