News from Alaska

Hi everybody. Sorry it has taken so long to blog you but there is so much to do and see blogging goes to the bottom of the list. We hit Anchorage at 8:15 PM after a long but uneventful flight. Lora and David have never flown before so it was an adventure. Lora was convinced she would get air-sick so I was prepared but she forgot to get sick (anyone need Dramamine?). David was planning to sleep all the way but spent the entire time looking out the window and smiling. He almost flipped when he saw the mountains. Connecticut should be ashamed to call their bumps mountains. Anyway, we got to the hotel, looked at the mountains from the window and finally collapsed when it started to get dark around 10:00 PM.

Saturday was our get organized day and to wait for my sister to arrive who invited herself along when she found out we were coming. She has been to Alaska many times fishing. We drove up to Wasilla to look around and do some shopping. I insisted that we visit the Anchorage museum and we spent several hours there, it is a “must see” if you go to Anchorage. My sister arrived around 4:00 PM and I lost control of the trip.

Sunday, I had regained limited control and we headed to Seward. We spotted our first moose standing on the side of the road in Anchorage. It took us almost 2 hours to get to Turnagain pass because we had to stop at every turn- off for pictures. On one of the stops we spotted 11 Dall Sheep in three separate groups on the slopes (not an easy task with snow still on the mountains). We also spotted numerous Bald Eagles and one Golden Eagle. We finally got to the pass and ran into snow. It was great watching the snow boarders trekking across the flats to go up the mountain. No lift ticket required. After a beautiful scenic drive we got to the Exit Glacier road to find it closed due to avalanches which is something else we don’t have in CT. We then went on into Seward. It is a small town and not much was going on.
Once the fish start running it is so busy you can’t turn around. We went back to Anchorage wandered around the various shops and then back to the hotel to collapse.
