Back in Oklahoma

Yesterday, I arrived here in Oklahoma City, after the first flight that’s ever made me nauseous. There was so much turbulence from Atlanta to here, that I honestly thought I might have to use those ridiculously tiny ‘barf’ bags. Boy, that would have been embarrassing. Anywho, I’m here at the OK DDDS “From Wagons to Waivers” conference and was happy to learn from my cab driver, that spring is really tornado season, so I’ve got nothing to worry about in my 6th floor hotel room
The conference is going very well so far. Our booth is in a great location, and we’ve gotten a lot of traffic. It’s kind of neat when you start seeing familiar exhibitors, and I always look forward to saying ‘hello’ to the friendly fellow at the “Liftvest” exhibit. He always asks how my dad is doing, and I wish him and his wife, who wasn’t able to make it this time, all the best.
I’ve really had to budget out our supplies because we’re already out of DVD’s except for one, and my box is almost completely empty of magazines and other handouts. Everyone is very friendly here, and we’ve had a lot of people stop by to ask questions and to simply thank us for being the Platinum sponsor. Many have also stopped by to doublecheck that we were presenting tomorrow, and that they were interested in attending our session… not too much pressure
I also overhead a lot of people saying they attended Warren’s session last year, so it’s reassuring to know that people still have us on their minds.
Tonight there is a reception, so that should be neat, and then one more day of exhibiting and presenting tomorrow. Wish me luck on my conference presentation debut.
Signing off, but not before some fun facts:
- The word “Oklahoma” comes from two Choctaw Indian words meaning “red man.” More American Indian tribes are headquartered in Oklahoma than any other state and 39 of those are federally recognized nations.
- The aerosol can was invented in Barlesville; the parking meter in Oklahoma City; and the shopping cart in Ardmore

Oklahoma!
Ok, so I’m in Oklahoma, and no twisters yet… though I did get a kick out of a sign they had in the hotel room about what to do in case of a tornado. Did you know that Oklahoma has, on average, 52 tornadoes a year, second only to Texas. This was great bed time reading
I was actually surprised, because I thought Kansas was the leader in my favorite type of weather. The hotel is really nice, and in the center they have pools of water with a lot of turtles and large fish (might be catfish), which I thought was the coolest thing. Only wished I had brought a camera.
Anyway, today started the OK 2007 Governor’s Conference on Developmental Disabilities. I got up early to set up the booth, and was pleasantly surprised that I was able get it up all on my own, with the help of a chair. Nothing’s fallen on my head yet, so that’s a great sign. So far, I’ve had a vast amount of people come to my booth, and all seemed very interested and would ask questions about what we do. I was having a hard time keeping DVD’s replenished on the table. There were about 20-30 exhibitors in total, and one man actually came up to me and asked where Richard and Bill were, which I thought was neat. It’s always cool when people know your name. He was working for a booth exhibiting “liftvests”. In addition, a woman from ANCOR who had been at the conference in San Diego also came over, pulled up a chair, and wanted to know all about Therap, so I gave her a mini Therap 101 session. People have been very friendly here, and I’m looking forward to another nice day tomorrow.
Signing out,
Kara
