How to Protect your Social Security Number

Here is some information that was posted by Firefox recently:

Did you know that with your name and Social Security Number (SSN), an identity thief can open new credit and bank accounts, rent an apartment, or even get a job? Your SSN is confidential because it is the key to a lot of your personal information. A thief can use it to get even more information about you.
One of the easiest things you can do to protect yourself is to be very careful about sharing it, even when it is requested on a form. Always ask why your number is needed, how it will be used and what will happen if you refuse. The answers to these questions can help you lower your risk and decide when to provide Social Security number. There is no law that prevents a business from asking for your SSN, but quite often, they don’t need it and you can choose not to provide it.
Additionally, experts recommend keeping your Social Security card in a safe place at home – don’t routinely carry it in your wallet. Never respond to phone or email requests for your number – always make sure you’ve initiated the interaction. Shred discarded documents. And if you suspect a problem, report it and get help.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a self help book written by Stephen R. Covey. I have read and re-read this book several times and take away new information each time I read it. Here are the habits and an overview of each habit. If you have not read this book, I highly recommend it!

•Habit 1:Be Proactive:

Synopsis: Take initiative in life by realizing that your decisions (and how they align with life’s principles) are the primary determining factor for effectiveness in your life. Take responsibility for your choices and the subsequent consequences that follow.

• Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind:
Synopsis: Self-discover and clarify your deeply important character values and life goals. Envision the ideal characteristics for each of your various roles and relationships in life.

• Habit 3: Put First Things First
Synopsis: Plan, prioritize, and execute your week’s tasks based on importance rather than urgency. Evaluate whether your efforts exemplify your desired character values, propel you toward goals, and enrich the roles and relationships that were elaborated in Habit 2.

• Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Synopsis: Genuinely strive for mutually beneficial solutions or agreements in your relationships. Value and respect people by understanding a “win” for all is ultimately a better long-term resolution than if only one person in the situation had gotten his way.

• Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Synopsis: Use empathetic listening to be genuinely influenced by a person, which compels them to reciprocate the listening and take an open mind to being influenced by you. This creates an atmosphere of caring, respect, and positive problem solving.

• Habit 6: Synergize
Synopsis: Combine the strengths of people through positive teamwork, so as to achieve goals no one person could have done alone. Get the best performance out of a group of people through encouraging meaningful contribution, and modeling inspirational and supportive leadership.

• Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Synopsis: Balance and renew your resources, energy, and health to create a sustainable, long-term, effective lifestyle.

Pivot Tables are awesome!

Day 1 of the conference has ended and I have learned much about electronic billing, electronic MARS and Pivot tables! My agency is planning to start the billing module in the next several months and we will partner with our county board to create efficiencies with the attendance/billing process. It currently takes me 10-12 hours to complete billing for our 120 persons supported in Day Services.

We hope to pilot MARs in a few residential sites later this month or in March and then quickly move to all residential sites and facility based programs. Today, I learned the essentials to get us up and running with MARs.

Finally, I was very impressed with the User Presentation from REACH in Alaska. I learned how to do Pivot tables in minutes. Before this session was over, I created several pivot tables from data in Therap.
It was an awesome first day! I can’t wait until tomorrow!

Will you be in New Jersey next month?

The Therap National Conference is in 2 weeks! I cannot wait to attend this conference because there are so many experts at the same place at the same time! I plan to attend some sessions about billing and want to learn more about CCHIT. I also want to catch some of the awesome presentations from other Therap users. I hope you are signed up for this conference and can’t wait to see you in New Jersey!

Using attendance tracking/billing through Therap

Hello all! My agency had some exciting discussions about using the attendance and billing modules through Therap. Please let me know if you are using either of these modules and what is the best way to approach the set up of these modules.
I am very excited to increase efficiencies with time spent processing end of the month billing. Our process is currently very cumbersome and it would be nice to use the technology that Therap offers to make this process more seamless.

Is your agency using MARs through Therap?

Hello all!
My agency is going to start using MARs through Therap in the next several weeks. We are going to pilot this in a couple of our homes first and then move to agency-wide usage. I wanted to check in with any agencies using the MAR module in Therap for feedback. Any recommendations? What were the time commitments required to get this started, etc? I look forward to your thoughts and advice!

Just another typical day!

So after a busy several weeks, I decided to take a vacation day from work and take my family to 6 Flags, St. Louis. My husband and two daughters and I headed out by 8am and were all in great spirits, until, 60 miles into the trip, my car stopped working! We pulled off of the highway at Warrenton, Missouri to search for help.
My first response was anger. As we went to a mechanic and they told me it would cost $400 for a new alternator and they would not be done until 5pm, I began to feel sour. I tried to stay positive and looked to rent a vehicle. This was not a viable option as there were no rental companies within a 20 mile radius. My husband used his iPhone to look up local activities. The closest thing in this town of 7,000 persons was a swimming pool. It was 1.7 miles away. So, we began to walk.
As we were walking, I began to think about how my days at my job are never typical. I am constantly problem solving for items that might go wrong. I then started to feel better that my family helped me to problem solve a potentially bad situation to turn into a good situation.
We got to the pool. It was an AWESOME pool! We had a blast!

My point is that even though we all deal with situations that may not be ideal (at work and in our personal lives), being able to reset and refocus is key. I think if we can keep an open mind, we can problem solve any situation. Had I not been able to reset and refocus, we would have had a terrible day. Instead, we had a BLAST!

TMS questions

As my agency delves further into TMS, some interesting questions arise. We are trying to figure out if there is a way to sign employees up for a training session who do not work for our agency. Has anyone encountered this, and if so, how did you deal with this?
A feature I would like to see Therap add is S-Comm notification to be sent to a supervisor when a learner is due for training. Would this assist any other agencies?

When CARF comes to your agency

Hello everyone!

Our three year accreditation survey with CARF will be happening sometime in June. I am happy to note that we will be completing the survey in a completely electronic manner. We worked hard to prepare to have this survey be all electronic and I am happy to share Therap and many other forward thinking ideas with the CARF surveyors.
Have any of you been through a CARF survey since you began using Therap? If so, what did you notice that was different as a result of using Therap? Who has completed a survey in an electronic format? Any words of wisdom?

Automated Training vs. a Live Trainer

So which do you use?

At my agency, we use a combination of T-Girl and a live trainer. We utilize a 4 hour block of time (with 3 ten minute breaks.) Here is an overview of what we do:

• T-logs:
- Overview by T-Girl
- Review by live trainer of expectations of documentation at our agency
- Trainee documents T-Log in Test Mode

• GERs:
- Overview by T-Girl
- Trainee documents section by section with live trainer and focuses on agency policies and procedures.

• S-Comm:
- Overview by T-Girl
- Trainer sends S-Comm to all trainees
- Trainee sends an S-Comm to trainer

• Health Tracking:
- Overview by T-Girl
- Trainee documents simultaneously while T-Girls discusses how to document a seizure

• Reports:
- Overview by T-Girl
- Live trainer reviews specific information depending on super roles assigned to trainees

• Help and Support:
- Overview by T-Girl
- Discussion by live trainer regarding Therap Support, Issues, Live Help, Help and Support
- Overview by live trainer regarding TMS

• ISP Data:
- Overview by live trainer regarding what ISP Data is
- Trainee documents a goal in Test Mode

• Individual Home:
- Live trainer shows this new feature in Therap and encourages trainees to use this

We end the training with an evaluation of the training (a open ended questionnaire) and have received great feedback using both the Automated training and a live trainer.
We also have, “Therap Office hours” on payday Fridays (every other Friday) that allow users to brush up and ask questions about Therap.
