Disability and Sexuality

The APHA Disability Section will be conducting a webinar sharing results from current research studies they have been focusing on throughout the past year. This webinar will focus on sexuality and intellectual disability.

Dilana Schaafsma, assistant professor at Maastricht University – Gouverneur Kremers Centrum in the Netherlands, will identify determinants of teaching sex education, and the implications for developing and delivering sex education to adults with intellectual disabilities with the aim to improve the development of future sex education programs for people with intellectual disabilities.

Gilbert Gonzales MHA, a Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota, will be discussing access to health care and health outcomes for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) populations. His presentation will discuss disability issues unique to older sexual minorities and present findings on disability among older adults in same-sex relationships.

Dementia in Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

Dr. Ronald Lucchino, Ph.D. President of the Board for the Southwest Florida Area Agency on Aging, joins us to give a comprehensive overview of dementia. In this webinar he will describe behaviors and symptoms of dementia, the different types and risk factors to mis-diagnosing an adult with an intellectual disability with dementia. Examples will be given to show the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia in adults with IDD as opposed to the general population.

Understanding Behavioral Changes in Adults with IDD and Dementia

Presenters: Kathryn Pears – Founder and CEO of Dementia Care Strategies, and Dr. Kathleen Bishop – PI for the Program on Aging and IDD at Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center

This webinar will dive into the behavioral aspects of dementia in persons with IDD. Dr. Kathie Bishop and Ms. Kathleen Pears will team up to go into detail regarding symptoms and behaviors associated with dementia in this population, and how sensory challenges can often be misinterpreted and associated with dementia. Environmental factors that can contribute to certain behaviors will be introduced as well as changes that you can make in an individual’s environment that will help to reduce specific attributes as well.
