For those of you who pay any attention to my Facebook or Twitter updates (there must be someone out there who does…) you may have noticed that I have been at rather a lot of swim meets of the last week or so. It’s coming to the end of the winter season which leads to high school and YMCA championships and other tournaments. Calum is one of three boys swimming in the first ever Wolcott High School swimming team. Although there are three of them, they count as a one man team (it’s a long story) and swim with Crosby High School in Waterbury, under the watchful eye of Coach Russo. It has been a great experience both from a swimming and a team building perspective
Wolcott and Crosby (they call themselves Cros-cott) swim in the Naugatuck Valley League and Calum qualified to swim in the NVL Finals on Fridays scoring Wolcott’s first ever 2 points! (in the 100 backstroke) He may even have qualified for the state trials in the backstroke and 200 IM – we’ll find out tomorrow).
All that was left now was to qualify for the YMCA New England Regionals (this time under Coach Kevin from the Southington Y). He wasn’t far off in the 50 and 100 freestyle so on Sunday we headed down to Middletown for what they call a last ditch invitational designed just for this purpose. First time out in 50 free he missed his required time by .09 of a second. Pretty close you might think, but next time, using his split time in the 100 he ended up missing out by .04! Poor Kevin, his blood pressure must have been much like mine coaching soccer.
And so it was off to the NVL invtational tonight where a good time could still count for YMCA regionals. After teasing us by coming in .3 of a second over again in the 50 free Calum ended up with a couple of great times and qualifying for both the 50 free and 100 free, so we’ll be off to Boston in a couple of weeks to swim there!
Congrats Calum, you earned this one!
