On arriving back from Indianapoiis yesterday, I went straight from Bradley International Airport to the Connecticut Convention Center (it seems like I haven’t left, though I did get to go home briefly overnight).

Iona is here with Team Max 1071 for the First Robotics Hartford Regional (the team has been here since Thursday). If you have never been to one of these events, you really have to check it out. It’s such a wild combination of science, technology, sport, and pep rally. Basically there is a game (described here) and each team has had six weeks to build a robot to compete in it. The robot has to be able to do some things by itself with limited instruction from a drive team member and others under the control of two drivers. Iona is then the fourth member of the drive team, known as the coach (she basicall gets to tell everyone else what to do – not a role she has any difficuly with!).

The team did really well by qualifying for the elimination rounds where they were eliminated in the Quarter Finals.

Very exciting stuff, and a whole lot of fun. However, probably the most impressive thing is to see what these kids are capable of creating in terms of robots, animations, and websites.
