When I was in Oregon in January, I noticed a number of the providers we visited displayed some very cool posters produced by the Oregon Council on Developmental Disabilities and The Arc of Oregon

I just received their 2005 poster talking about the use of the word “retard”. I am not normally a great one for political correctness, in fact if anything I try and be objectionable! However in the case of terminology in the disabilities field I am a strong believer in the use of People First Language. I think that if you have to stop and think about how you are going to use your words to describe someone as a person then you are more likely to think about the impact of your actions and behavior.

I am also a firm believer in correcting others, so if you ever catch me slipping up, make sure you call me on it!

On a lighter note, check out this list of the top words that aren’t in the dictionary from Merriam Webster.
