George Best died today. Best was probably the best footballer that the UK produced during my lifetime and as with so many other tainted stars from football and beyond sufferred from too many excesses in too many other areas of his life. Best was effectively lost to football by his mid twenties and fought alcoholism ever since.

Along with his skill, he had the cheek that is required of a performer, I remember him heading a ball out of an England goalkeeper’s hand (the keeper only had it in one hand so it was a legitimate move) only to be wrongly called for a foul.

A bit like Mickey Mantle, the world will not only mourn what they have lost, but what might have been.
