My organization started a brand new project on October 7th called the “Treatment Mall”. For anyone who does not know what a Treatment Mall is it is a lot like High School or College. Our clients attend treatment related classes from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM Monday-Friday and are not permitted to go back to their living units during this time. Being a 24/7 Treatment Center that houses 56 clients it was important to us to expand the type of active treatment we were offering so that every client was able to immerse themselves into the Therapeutic Milieu. As you can image this program has taken a lot of effort on the organizations part to successfully create the Treatment Mall and so far it has worked out pretty well. One of the main components of any project like this is how to create schedules and keep attendance. I first thought that we would be able to utilize Therap’s wonderful Training Management System but after some trial and error I realized this would not work. One component of Therap that is working very well is the Attendance Module, after a lot (hours and hours) of data entry (not my favorite part of this module and I honestly thing that this could use some vast improvement) we are up and running. So far most of the staff are liking how fast and easy it is to enter date and absolutely love the reports that are able to generate. I’m looking forward to seeing what other components of Therap can be utilized to help me with the logistics of the Treatment Mall but right now I’m just happy that the Attendance portion of this process seems to be working well.
Recently I was able to have a great conversation with Deborah Hibbard regarding some questions that MDC had utilizing different modules in Therap. One of the biggest questions was if MDC could utilize the TMS Module for clients. MDC is in the process of implementing a Treatment Mall program and we need to have the ability to organize the clients into different classes and keep track of all the logistics of the Treatment Mall. For anyone who uses the TMS Module in Therap knows how wonderful this module is at the logistics of education tracking. When I asked in TMS could be utilized for clients the answer was an immediate “Of Course” and then Deborah talked me through the simple process to implement the program. Once again I was in wonder at how you can utilize Therap for such a different array of needs. I’m excited to see how TMS will work for this project and I will keep everyone informed of the progress.
Therap held a Regional Conference in Montana on June 12th and 13th and it was wonderful. I really appreciated the great presentations offered, especially the previews of the upcoming changes. This conference was a nice way to network with providers and trainers alike. I’m hoping to be able to go to the National Conference in January just to see how other organizations around the country utilize all aspects of Therap.
I don’t know about the rest of you but I definitely am suffering from Spring Fever. I’m looking forward to being able to open my windows and do some major spring cleaning at home. At work I plan on doing the same thing. I’ve finally convinced the management team to give BERs a chance so I am going to buckle down and start creating Behavior Plans for all our clients. My plan is that by July 1st all the extra paperwork we use to document events in the units will be nonexistent and we will be maximizing our time and effort. Wish me luck. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.
As I look at all the posts from the National Conference and read of all the exciting things happening in other organizations, I realize MDC is stuck in the mud and going nowhere fast where Therap is concerned. This organization has reached a point where it either needs to fully accept Therap, the good and the bad, or figure out a different approach to record keeping. Being a Certified Trainer, I of course, am pushing for Therap. There are so many wonderful modules that MDC could be utilizing to make our lives easier if I could just get people to open their minds and experiment a little. So I’m asking for help from my fellow trainers. Did you have similar problems in your agency to get them to fully utilize Therap? If so, what did you do to overcome the situation? I look forward to hearing from everyone.
It’s been while since I blogged and I apologize for that. Life at MDC has been pretty busy and Therap usage is at an all-time high. Recently we have made a switch in how we document PRNs. MDC procedures had staff title and document an event in Tlogs, including the use of PRNs. The Nurses would then create an additional Tlog and title it as PRN. This led to massive confusion when it came to pulling documentation on a client and skewed the numbers to indicate the client received twice as many PRNs. In order to fix this problem, the Nursing department was trained on how to use the MARs for the purpose of documenting PRNs. The staff were also trained to not include PRNs in the T-logs so that double reporting would not occur. This procedure has been in place for only a few weeks but is starting to make difference already. Our next project is to begin to utilize the BER portion of Therap to more accurately record client behavioral events. Is there any other organizations using the BERs? How well do they work for you? Last week I attended the Therap Regional Conference here in Montana and what a great experience it was! I learned that I have so very much more to learn about Therap, and that I could be overwhelmed very easily, so I’m taking a deep breath and diving into my latest project.
MDC is utilizing only a fraction of Therap and when I ask people why they don’t use certain modules I usually get a blank look and a “I don’t know how” statement. To help train and educate the staff here about all the wonders that Therap has to offer I have volunteered to create a fictional MDC Client in the trainers site and use every piece of Therap that I possibly can. After creating my fictional person I hope to be able to train staff in way that will help them understand Therap better.
My question to all of you savvy Therap users is: How do you train your staff and introduce new modules that you believe would be beneficial to everyone? What type of resistance do you encounter and how do you overcome it?
I’m excited to begin creating my new person and exploring new modules in Therap that I have yet to encounter. I look forward to hearing from all of you.
It’s a typical spring day here in Montana, snowy and cold lol. However, the weather is slowly but surely starting warm up and Spring Fever has definitely hit our Clients and Staff.
With the change from recording most of our events into GERs to recording them into T-Logs and Health Tracking there have been a lot of discussions about the best way to title events and the best way to do tracking. There have been several glitches in the new system but we are slowly working them out and are starting to travel down the right track to a more streamlined event recording system. Any suggestions that anyone has on the best way to collect data I would greatly appreciate it.
I am also starting to look into how the Attendance module works but am hopelessly lost so any help would make my day .

Hello everyone in Therap Land! My name is Tammy Ross and I’m so happy to be a Certified Trainer for the Montana Developmental Center. Let me tell you a little about what we do around here. Montana Developmental Center (MDC) is a treatment center that serves people with developmental disorders and most of our Clients also have been dually diagnosed with a Mental Illness.
My job is to keep the Superintendent, Clinical Director, and Director of Quality Management on task . I’m also a co-leader of the Therap Steering Committee, so I’m pretty busy.
Currently MDC is changing the way we record GER events. We are actually eliminating about 85% of our GERs and recording them either in T-Logs or Health Tracking, this project has taken a long time to complete but the end result will be well worth the effort.
Well I better get back to work. I’ll let you all know how are new GER documentation works once it gets up and running. I look forward to hearing from all of you and reading your blogs.
